In this article I will share Brahmin surnames list in India based on my ongoing research on Brahmins.
I have tried to make this list of Brahmin surnames as exhaustive as possible. If you have anything to add, please drop me an email.
Below is presented, by state/ geographic region detailed Hindu Brahmin surnames list.
Bengali Brahmin Surnames List
Bengali Brahmins are those who have origins in the West Bengal, Tripura, Bangladesh and parts of Jharkhand. At one time, Bengali Brahmins were famous for their scholarship, erudition and nationalism and produced the likes of Shri Shri Ramakirshna[1], Rabindranath Thakur[2], Chaitanya Mahaprabhu[3], Raghunandan Bhattacharya, Panchanan Tarkaratna[4], Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar[5] etc.
Today however majority Bengali Brahmins are not aware of Hindu customs, let alone Brahmin customs. For example
- Ex-CM of West Bengal openly denigrated Hinduism. [6]
- Current CM offers Muslim prayers/ Namaz, and indulges in massive Muslim appeasement at the cost of native Hindu culture. [7]
- Ex-mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya openly eats beef. [8]
- Many so-called Bengali Brahmins eat beef and pork. [9]
It is not a good situation, as even demographics is against Bengali Hindus, and in all likelihood Bengali Hindus will become a minority by 2050, and extinct by end of this century. [10] [11]
A list of common Bengali Brahmin surnames is given below.

Bihari Brahmin Surnames List (Bihar/ Mithila / Jharkhand)
At one time Bihari Brahmins were famous for their scholarship and erudition and Mithila[14] produced one Vedic scholar after another starting from Yajnavalkya. Today except for a few exceptional scholar and Vedic experts, most Bihari Brahmins lack academic rigor and are more interested in rajasic and tamasic pursuits [15].

Uttar Pradesh / Uttarakhand / Other North Indian Brahmins Surname List
At one time North Indian Brahmins were famous for their scholarship and erudition and the central Gangetic basin was considered the seat of Vedic learning. Many of these Brahmins were famous for their learning, sophistication and range of knowledge. But things are really bad now - especially given the Dalit extremism and rising Islamic fundamnetalism in these regions.
Except for a handful of noted scholars especially in places like Varanasi, Allahabad - majority of these north Indian brahmins lack shastra knowledge and academic rigor. They eat vegetarian food and indluge in slogaeering like "Jai Shree Ram", "Namah Shivaya" or "Jai Parshuram" and writing against beef eating on Facebook.
Having said that, even today, UP and Uttarakand regularly churn out quite few Vedic scholars and Sanskrit experts.

Dravida Brahmins (Tamil / Karnataka/ Kerala)
Iyers and Iyengars are truly the only sect of Brahmis who have truly maintained their Brahmanical traditions to this day and in fact I would say that in modern day Hindusim, south Indian Brahmins are playing a much greater role than north Indians. Many south Indian Brahmins are fluent in Sanskit, highly educated in secular subjects as well and regularly follow their festivals and events.
The only problem is that many Iyers and Iyengers, especially from TN are vehemently anti-Hindi and anti-North Indian, and that is a worrisome matter.

Note
- Some opine, that "Nambissan" are not Brahmins as they cannot enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Nambissan, Varrier in Kerala and the Staanika in Karnataka are same. These people are very close to the Brahmin community as they make garlands for the deities, wash utensils of the Nivedyam made for Deities and other duties to help the main priest in temples.

DeleteAndhra Brahmins are missing.
DeleteThere are two main groups in Andhra:
Niyogi
Vaidiki/Dravida
The surnames of AP brahmins could be very confusing, because in AP brahmins identify themselves with gotra. And suffix like Sharma, Deekshitulu, Joshyula, Mishrula, Dwibhashyula, Bhagvatula, Shashtrula, Shastry, Upadhyayula, Suarashtrula, Bhattula, Saraswatula is added.
It is so because, Brahmins into AP came from two or three groups. Came from northern India between 5th-15 th century. All these three groups are linked to each other.
Thanks.
DeleteActually, the Hegde community is not Brahmin, they are basically Jains who are close to Hindu Brahmins.
DeleteTrue heggade is a jain community. Hegde is bunts community such as aishwarya rai Sunil shetty etc.
DeleteHegade is a brahmin community in Uttar Kannada district in Karnataka.

DeleteHI Pradeep,
DeleteI am of the opinion that "Nambissan" is not a Brahmin as they cannot enter the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Nambissan, Varrier in Kerala and the Staanika in Karnataka are same. Hi Anonymous, I am dis agreeing with you, Nambeeshan is brahmin as nambeeshans wear poonool (Sacred thread) and they perform 16 ceremonies (Shodasha acharam)in life span. They have the rite to chant Gayatri manthra and they follow yajurveda (Boudhayana sutram). Varrier is not at all brahmins... Nambeeshans are equal to sthanikas in karnataka. Hundreds of sthanikas in Kasaragod (District in kerala) is associating with nambeeshan's organization and 'Nambeeshan organization, (Sri pushpaka brahmana seva sangham) is part of All India Brahmin Federation.. Then kindly tell me, why did you tell nambeeshans are not brahmins? Please don't mis lead people if you don not have any idea on system.

ReplyDeleteYes, Nataraj are brahmins
DeleteI am in TN for many decades. Many north indian kshatriyas and brahmins should come and settle in TN. Here in TN brahmin population is little so they find it hard to manage the opposite anti-brahmin groups.

Deletethanks virat. being a tamilbrahmin,i agree with your assessment. We are not anti-hindi/northindians. The local politics prevents the implementation of hindi in schools which follow state syllabus. I would like you to add that we stopped using surnames after dravidian movement(anti-brahmin wave during which brahmins were beaten and janeau was cut). But those who got displaced from TN still use surnames
Deleterightly said joshiji. have been facing the situation for more than twenty years
Deleteidiot brahmins, you all should be massacred like Mr.Hitler did to jews .. you spoiled hinduism and very culture, you nomads.
Deleteit is high time we start our umbilical chord roots to North India and never call Norty India or south India but say only Maha-Bharat and renew our sanskrit language and Hindi language back to its glory. This in no way we are belittling Tamil. Sanskrit is our divine language. We must stand in unity and dawn on thye misguided groups of other Hindus whom are believing the distorted history portrayed by Tamil & Atheist Groups in Tamilnadu.
DeleteThere are no gowda saraswatha brahmana surnames mentioned above.Kindly, see to it

DeleteHey it's very nice compilation.
ReplyDeleteBut u have forgotten to mention the tradition of brahmins of Odisha which is almost intact like Tamilnadu and Maharashtra.
Here Brahmins are still revered respectfully as before and hold high positions in government offices
I am from Odisha dear. I do not agree with the fact that Brahmins are revered respectfully here especially Govt. Offices. They are revered because of the high positions not because of their being Bahmins.

ReplyDeleteVery well said Subhodeep. I have been in most Indian states and have very keenly observed the behaviour of brahmins and your views are completely 100% endorsed. In bengal for the benefit of having nuthin to do and still get state dole outs brahmins have completely capitulated and is the most anti hindu state alongwith Kerala. Bihari brahmins are interested only in ego games and have not erudition/scholarly bent of mind. UP brahmins try to be in political arena with very little regard for scholarly achievements except for few of them. Gujarat , Rajasthan Delhi , Punjab brahmins are totally materialistic with no hint of brahminism in them. Telugu brahmins are lost somewhere. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka brahmins still hold the fort in scholarly pursuits.
ReplyDeleteStop being foolish and I dont know how come this stupid comment of your was never moderated.
DeleteHow can you ever say that " Gujarat , Rajasthan Delhi , Punjab brahmins are totally materialistic with no hint of brahminism in them."
Mind your non sense and dont insult Brahmin of a particular region. Who are you to judge and how have you judged them?
its time for us to regain the lost teachings of vedas to our society.we have to set up small religious institudes or channel so that the new generation brahmins can also learn the gitas, upanishads, vedas, etc. nowadays, there are a number of brahmins who even haven't heard or known about even adi sankara and about upanishads. the new generation brahmins espectially in southern states namely girls are marrying other castes and a whole 4000 trs old culture is merely destroyed due to their zero knowledge in our scriptures and what is our place in history and even around the world.least, but not last i quote what lord krishna in gita has told that the brahmin roots will be lost if he or she is not doing atleast the morning and evening every day prayers which is told compulsory in vedas.please do something about it.it is a request from a brahmin form kerala where sankara was born and falling population due to love marriages (mainly girls) and population fallout. But i also would like to suggest the brahmin authorities to pass vedas to all communities and across the world.
ReplyDeleteI am a Rahree Brahman from WB. What I mostly see most brahmin families who even follow religion
Deleteare very ritualistic for the most part. They know and care the least about the true essence of the
religion or of being a brahman.Even the culturally and financially established brahmin families
nowadays send their children to such schools where they do not receive an iota of religious, moral
and ethical teachings. How will they eventually know how and where the greatness lies in this ancient religious order and why they should also put their bit to preserve it especially when
they do not get it from even their parents who only believe that only mimicry of the ways of life
that are deemed superior to us would make their past, present and future glorious.

DeleteThis site is a great one not only the issues it addresses but also the wealth of content it provides
ReplyDeleteto the reader. No words of praise isn't perhaps enough for the efforts of shree Subhodeep Mukhopadhyay.
He has rightly pointed out that, even the Brahmins in West Bengal let alone the rest of Hindu populace
are not awre of bare Hindu customs. The reality is so stark that it can be seen even with one's eyes
closed. I would wait with all eagerness to see if shree Mukhopadhyay can shed more light on this,in
another article, as to why and when West Bengal Brahmins lost in the way.
Thank you for the kind words.

ReplyDeleteNepali baahun living in karnaali east part of Nepal are not bhramins in Nepal. They all are actualy "khas" came from middle east and some of them were taken by british from Latin Amerika and setteled them by british in Meghalaya as spys. Some of them came from middle east with Temur Len as the porter. Nepali khas started :yagopabit
ReplyDelete" only since B.S 2017-2040, just 55 year ago because they were suggested to
have "janeu" by English. After visit of elizabeth to Nepal, a british team suggested to Nepali khas to pretend like bramin and change there cast so that it will become to save them from india. So all the nepali living in eastern part of Nepal are khas=kho. There ancistors were the porter of Temur len. They were storing hater of hindu sages and sanyasi so they killed abot 600 sanyasi who wrere fighting against British Raj in 1957. Specially the khas living in the district:gorkha, syanjaa, jhaapaa, morang and sunsari disguys themselvs when they marched from nepal to India to kill sanyasi. These khasas went to sanyasi as like pligims and sanyasi dal of Jhasi ki rani lakshmi baai happily welcomed them to stay night with them but khasa killd all 600 sanyasi during night. This was the hidden histry of Estern Nepal khas brahmins. They are not brahmin so they were called bahun by the kings and Thakuris. ReplyDeleteThere is one most important surname missing in U.P.Brahamin group, please add this "AWASTHI".who they arranged "awasath"yajna for vanprasthashram pravesh they all brahmins called Awasthi.I have defination for all uttarpradesh kanyakubja brahmins'surname if anybody interested to know.btw all bengali brahmins ended with upadhyay mukhopaddhyay, bandopaddhyay etc.are also related to kanyakubja brahman shakha....
ReplyDeleteActually, Sharma, Varma and Dass are not surnames, but are suffix titles to be placed after their first names by Brahmins, Kshtriyas and Vaishyas respectively.
ReplyDeleteThis is amusing and not very well informed. Virtually ll Brahmins use the title Sharman(or Sharma) when they do rituals. The origin of Iyer is iyya with added the respectful r at the end becomes iyer. name like Subbiah and Muthiah were common less than a hundred years back not just among Tamil Brahmins. In the list gothras ar mixed up with titles. Names like Krishnan and Rangarajan are used by most castes not just Brahmins in TN. In Kerala Nambissans and warriers are Ambalavasis(residing in the temple) who provided services in the temple. This whole thing need editing and ill informed suggestions do not help.

ReplyDeleteIn Tamilnadu,Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka and Kerala brahamans are not aboriginal of dravidian land..They came from north india. They were 'Anti Sanskrit' Brahamans. They hate Sanskrit language. They went to settle dravidian region near about 2500 years ago. They invented their own Grammar style of dravdian languages but faild to get the vocabulary. They used tribal words mixing with a majority of sanskrit words.Aryavart Brahamans or you can say Arya Brahamans were not interested in Idol worshiping at that period (except Shiva linga Worship). This was the reason why temples of Dravidian region are much older and richest than Aryavart temples. They holy birth places of lord Ram, lord Krishna are in north india but in north there is not any oldest temple of hindu religion due to lack of interest of idol worship of Aryan as they follow the Vedic scripts ,Vedas. This is the main difference between north indian brahamans and Dravidian brahamans. There is not anything like North indian brahamans and South indian Brahamans. All are same .

This article and the subsequent comments are interesting. I do agree that the Tamil Brahmins and the Karnataka Brahmins have held up the brahminical way of life. I am a Tamil Brahmin who has lived in Karnataka for a long time now and therefore understand that aspect. However, I cannot comment about the other states although I have lived and travelled across the country, I have not paid too much attention to this aspect.
ReplyDeleteAs a parent of two adult children, I have inculcalated the true brahminical values in spirit with respect for everybody in this country/world. Brahminism is not something to flaunt but a deep commitment to live by its dictum, understanding why the caste system came up in the true sense. We truly need to respect and acknowledge each one's contribution to society. A society only full of Brahmins cannot sustain.
