Brahmin Hiranyadama of Cambodia of 780 AD

Brahmin Hiranyadama of Cambodia of 780 AD

In this article I will talk about the life of the great Tantrik Sadhak Brahmin Hiranyadama of Cambodia (Kambuja), who migrated from India to Cambodia in 780 CE on the request of the Hindu King of Cambodia, Jayavarman II.

Jayavarman II (Khmer: ជ័យវរ្ម័នទី២) (c. 770–835) was a 9th-century king of Cambodia, widely recognized as the founder of the Khmer Empire, which ruled much of the Southeast Asian mainland for more than six hundred years. The most valuable inscription concerning Jayavarman II is the one dated in 1052 AD, two centuries after his death, and found at the Sdok Kok Thom temple in present-day Thailand.

The inscription from the Sdok Kak Thom temple says that a Brahman named Hiranyadama (Sanskrit: हिरण्यदाम , Bengali: হিরণ্যদাম ) , proficient in the lore of magic power, came from Janapada in response to His Majesty’s having invited him to perform a sublime rite which would release Kambujadesa [the kingdom] from being any longer subject to Java. The text recounts that at Mahendraparvata, Jayavarman II took part in a ritual by the Brahman Hiranyadama, and his chief priest Lord Sivakaivalya, known as devaraja (Khmer: ទេវរាជា) which placed him as a chakravartin, Lord of the Universe.

Migration of Brahmin Hiranyadama from India to Cambodia in 780 AD

  • At that time there came a Brahmana (Brahmin) named Hiranyadama from janapada (India), a savant versed in siddhi vidyA.
  • He was invited by his highness, Parameshvara (Jayavarman II), in order to conduct a ceremony (vidhi) which should prevent this land of Kambuja from ever being dependent on Java, and to bring about instead that there should be only one single "Lord of the Lower Earth" who would be Chakravartin ("Universal Lord").
  • This Brahmin conducted the ceremony in accordance with the Vinashikha.
  • He consecrated the Lord of the World, who is king (Devaraja).
  • Hiranyadama taught the Tantras - holy vinashika, Nayottara, Sammoha and Shirshacheda, all of which he recited from beginning to end, in order to have them written down to teach them to the Royal Priest Shivakaivalya.
  • Hiranyadama gave instructions to Shivakaivalya so that the latter could perform the ritual in the presence of the King.
  • Sivakaivalya and his family were ordained as Royal Priests.
