Migration of Brahmins as per Dharasena I Copper Plates of Maitraka Dharasena I in 490 AD

Migration of Brahmins as per Dharasena I Copper Plates of Maitraka Dharasena I in 490 AD

In this post I will talk about the migration of Brahmins as per Dharasena I Copper Plates of Maitraka Dharasena I in 490 AD.

Maitraka dynasty was a Hindu dynasty that ruled in Gujarat and Saurashtra (Kathiawar) from the 468 AD to the 767 ce. The name Maitraka derives from Mithra, the Sun deity of Indo-Iranians and Mitanni. The Mitrakas were sun worshippers and that is why they were called Surya Vamsi. Dharasena I ruled from 480 to 500 AD.

As per the Dharasena I copper Plates, he granted a village in Saurashtra in Gujarat to 2 Brahmin brothers, Ajuna ( Sanskrit: अजुन , Bengali : অজুন ) and Mankasvamin ( Sanskrit: मन्कस्वामिन् , Bengali : মন্কস্বামিন ), sons of Guhadhya ( Sanskrit: गुहढ्य , Bengali : গুহঢ্য ) who had migrated from Sihor. They received two fields and a well.

Thus in 490 AD, 2 Gujrati Brahmins migrated within Gujarat in a North East to South West direction.

Meanwhile in India and Elsewhere

  • Aryabhata, Indian astronomer and mathematician, calculates pi (π) as ≈ 62832/20000 = 3.1416, correct to four rounded-off decimal places.
  • Guptas were ruling over Eastern India.
  • Vakatakas were ruling over Central India.
  • Hunas (Indo-Hephthalites) were in control of Punjab and eastern Afghanistan.
  • Valabhis were ruling over Gujarat.
  • Zoroastrian Sassanid dynasty were ruling over Persia and Western Afghanistan, little knowing that in another 120 years they'd all be wiped out with the advent of Islam.
  • Europeans were still fighting among themselves, and Christianity was gaining ground in Europe.
