Migration of Brahmins as per Patna Plate of Mahabhavagupta I in 941 AD

In this post I will talk about the migration of Brahmins as per Patna Plate of Mahabhavagupta I in 941 AD.

Janamajeya Mahabhavagupta I, successor to Shivagupta belonged to the Somavamsa family which ruled over the area around Sambalpur region of Orissa. Mahabhavagupta I ruled from 935 AD to 970 AD.

In his 6th year that is in 941 AD he issued the Patna Plate.

He granted a village in Balangir district of Orissa to 4 Brahmins.

  • Kondadeva (Sanskrit: कोण्डदेव ,  Bengali: কোণ্ডদেব ) son of Ramasharman (Sanskrit: रामशर्मन् ,  Bengali: রামশর্মন্ ) from Hampi in North Karnataka. He was originally a resident of Mukhalingam area of coastal Andhra Pradesh.
  • Damaka (Sanskrit: दामक , Bengali: দামক ) son of Aivuli (Sanskrit: ऐवुलि ,  Bengali: ঐবুলি ) from Hampi
  • Son of Narapaganda (Sanskrit: नारपगण्ड , Bengali: নারপগণ্ড ), who migrated from Sonpur area in Saran District of Bihar
  • Vasudeva (Sanskrit: वासुदेव , Bengali: বাসুদেব) son of Rishikesha (Sanskrit: हृषिकेश , Bengali: হৃষিকেশ ) was from Sambalpur region of Odisha
