Y Chromosome
1. Causes maleness
2. Transmitted from father to son
3. Most of the Y-Chromosome is passed on intact from father to son
Genetic Marker
1. A genetic marker is a gene or a DNA sequence with a known location on a chromosome that can be used to identify cells, individuals or species.
2. A marker is designated by DYS#
Y-STR
1. Y-Chromose test used Short Tandem Repeat (STR) markers.
2. Occurs when a pattern of two or more nucleotides are repeated and the repeated sequences are directly adjacent to each other - example (CATG)n
3. These occur in the non-coding DNA section
Allele
1. A particular number of repetition is known as an allele - it is the markers value
2. Varies from person to person
3. Has a distinctive frequency within a population
Haplotype
A set of these DYS marker allele values for a particular person is called their haplotype.
